Hi new people! I would say I'm pleased the blue hellsite is dying because I've never liked it, but honestly the way in which it's dying is SO worrying in terms of what it means about Apple's use of the app store to control huge swathes of the internet it has no right to, so actually I'm right bloody pissed. However! I am glad you are here! I hope you like Dreamwidth! Drop a note here or on my sticky post to say hi and introduce yourself, I should probably update it for real when I'm off my phone but for now, have this!

SERIOUSLY agree re: Apple setting themselves up as de facto puritanical internet censors. Incredibly disturbing. Ugh.

Yeahh I hate how so many things are shifting to apps in general - I tried to volunteer to canvas for the Democratic challenger in my nearest swing district last month and literally could not because my phone still thinks I am in the UK and would not let me download the app they were using to send canvassers to houses - when for the most part the only thing apps do that a modern website does not is 'let companies get more information about you and your phone' but Apple especially has taken such a disturbing line on them I just. Augh. There's probably something about getting people so focussed on content (apps) they stop thinking about distribution (app stores) but it is a little too far past my bedtime for it rn.

I'm just gonna toss this as evidence #0233505 that Apple is an awful company and should not be supported. I am not sure what can be done about it beyond boycotting their products. :(

Yeahhh I'm unfortunately not sure there's a really good answer to that. They're superficially easy to boycott because their hardware is such a closed ecosystem, but the things that allowed them to get so big/keep them so big - the desire for something that 'just works', the idea of an iphone specifically as a status/class symbol - are society-wide things it takes more than just buying an android phone to combat :|

Yeah, I agree. :( What's really hard too with them is that a lot of educational spaces use Apple products - I know the school I worked at, every school I did student teaching stuff with, and my college all used Apple products exclusively because they got them through grants.

Honestly Android isn't much better. Google has uh, not held up with their "no do evil" idea and that's the most popular version of droids now. :(

There really isn't an ethical alternative so far as I know in cell phones and it really, really sucks.

(But fuck Apple esp.)
