summer of horror 2023

Soon, sorry! Fandoms are tagged for previous letters in the meantime.

Hello friend, it is time for horror and I am so excited to see what you will write for me! If you want inspiration beyond this letter I am also [archiveofourown.org profile] kimaracretak, where I have a small but reflective-of-things-I-like set of bookmarks, and kimaracretak on 8tracks if you want #aesthetic musical inspiration.

I love these canons for the worldbuilding and mytharcs as well as their characters and relationships, and I am easy to please as long as you stay away from my DNWs, so don't feel like you Have to write any of my specific prompts. Don't read anything into relative lengths of sections, I am equally happy to get something for anything in this letter! Some of these prompts are reused from old letters, and if you have written them for me before, rest assured that I loved your fic, I am simply greedy and would like to see every possible take on my favourite scenarios. Though I've loads of specific dark- & smut-focussed likes, don't feel obliged to pull from those lists. That being said, I'm extremely not into plotless/conflictless fluff, and would prefer you avoid it.

I love everything from short introspection bits to long plotty missionfic to sex scenes as ways to explore character/setting/worldbuilding. I'm here for the horror and while I'm generally open to any f/f in the background or foreground of fics and have some shippy prompts, I'm not really expecting it here! Where it is prompted for, I don't need a lot of romance in my ships: sex for power, manipulation, on the weird platonic-romantic-maybe-I-just-want-to-be-you line, or between friends who want to have fun is great.

Changeling: The Lost

General: CtL is the tabletop game of my whole entire heart and I just want to live in that world a bit more! I have a slight preference for stories set in Arcadia or the Hedge, but absolutely will not say no to Earth-set ones. Sourcebook-wise, I am most familiar with Dancers in the Dusk, Winter Masques, and Night Horrors. I especially love oneiromancy and am super weak for stories that contrast the deep sense of place/setting with changelings' very tenuous sense of self. I'm always here for body horror, but for this canon especially - when in doubt, lovingly cut someone's eyes out and replace them with flowers and/or gems. Adhere as strictly or loosely to game mechanics as feels right for your story.

Requested Ships/Characters:

Dare Me - Megan Abbott

General: Codependent teenage best friends AND not-not sexual obsession with #unavailable older women in positions of authority, I am immensely catered to. I'd love something that leans into the fever-dream horror of consumption of it all. All the obsession, all the clinical-sensual interest in what bodies can do, all the levels of genuinely caring (or genuinely hateful!) mentorship that ultimately can't do anything but fail. I love ladies and noir and glitter and murder, you can't disappoint me! For this request, I'd love something that picks up on the dark inherent in the book and magnifies it, especially including making my requested faves the cause of the horror (e.g. Addy/Beth on a serial killing spree). I'm open to any femslash ships between girls in the squad, as well as Addy/Colette and Beth/Colette. I've seen and enjoyed the show, and am open to fusions of book and show canon if you like. Bonus musical inspiration: Lana Del Rey - She's not Me, The Amazing Devil - Battle Cries.

Requested Ships/Characters:

  • Beth Cassidy & Addy Hanlon

  • Colette French

Body Horror: There's a lot of body horror inherent to cheerleading, in the book, from the eating disorders to the injuries to the constant threat of falling during a stunt and snapping your neck. So something that leans into that - the transformation and the pain of transformation, manipulating each other's broken bones to turn them into something Else. I also enjoy that this is a type of horror that works well with other requested types - killer horror that leans into guro, paranormal (vampire) horror that lingers over descriptions of turning/feeding, gothic horror with girls who pass into/out of ghostliness in ways that shouldn't be possible.

Cosmic Horror: The girls discover something awful when stargazing at Lanvers. Colette comes to Sutton Grove and finds it's basically a cheerleader-led cult and has to decide whether to join them or destroy them (or maybe Beth or Addy makes that choice for her). Colette comes to Sutton Grove to start a cheerleader cult to some elder god (and Beth and Addy disagree over whether to join her or take over from her).

Folk Horror: Sure, the dying industrial town isn't quite as isolated as some of the traditional folk horror settings — but there's no reason you can't isolate them even further in fic! Or lean into the girls as the isolated community (cheerleading squad as agent of horror!), set apart from everyone else in town. Psychogeography and Sutton Grove: something about the contrast between the industrial ruins and places like Lanvers and the gorge. Something about cheerleading legends/folklore — a girl, maybe the Flyer having to be sacrificed to ensure success at States? The Sutton Grove town leaders want Colette to save the town via taking the squad to championships, but the girls have darker plans for how to use Colette. A straightforward Blood on Satan's Claw AU would delight me.

Killer Horror: Serial killer AUs!! Beth and Addy as killers being mentored by Colette, Beth murdering her way through the Marines, the girls finding out about Colette's past as a killer, Addy or Colette turning on the squad.

Paranormal Horror: GHOSTS! Beth dies after her jump from the pyramid and haunts Addy and/or Colette. The ghost of a dead cheerleader possess someone on the squad. Something about the St Reggie's girl who killed herself in the woods. Colette as a supernatural creature - I'm fond of vampires, but go wild! - especially if she's feeding on the girls/their energy in some way. Spin out the decaying industrial town setting and send the characters to explore a haunted/abandoned place in Sutton Grove.

Psychological Horror: Anything magnifying the fucked-up Beth-Addy-Colette relationships, all the manipulation and possessiveness leading to a point where they're not sure what the world outside each other looks like. Something about Beth's vaguely-prophetic dreams - does she slip further and further into them until she doubts what reality is? Changeling: The Lost was #formational for me in terms of psychological horror, so I'm thinking about a C:TL AU (Colette as a member of the Gentry and the squad as changelings she collects?), but then again, I'm always thinking about C:TL AUs, so.

Violent Horror: Love is a kind of killing and cheerleading is a type of violence! Take all the body horror stuff I loved above to the extreme - the girls literally picking each other apart to see how they work, maybe killing Emily after she breaks her leg? Or combine with killer horror, Will and Kurtz and the rest of the Marines being tortured/killed by the girls (and then they have sex in the blood of their enemies :D).

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit

General: Oh this SHOW. 'Ghost' rewired my brain on a fundamental level when I was like 14 and ever since then I have been in this pit. Sorry not sorry. Will never recommend this show to people but I love and and I love you if you're in the pit with me. I'm more of an early-seasons fan, but happy for fics set at any point in the timeline! SVU has a really particular sort of mood, a cold comfort that's not quite bleak and not quite hopeful, and I'm really interested in the ways in which the female lawyers & judges negotiate their particular vocabularies of justice and care. I've seen Conviction but didn't really like it, so feel free to ignore it.

  • Olivia Benson

  • Olivia Benson & Alexandra Cabot

  • Olivia Benson & Serena Benson

  • Olivia Benson & Kathy Stabler

Dark Fantasy: I love magical realism and New York as a living or semiliving character.

Folk Horror: The casefic/scenes-from-a-casefic request! Olivia should investigate a cult, that's it, that's all I've got.

Paranormal Horror: Ghosts are now canon in the L&Overse, thank you Elliot Stabler of less-than-a-month ago for following Kathy's ghost into that interrogation room, and yknow ... what is a Detective Benson but a miserable pile of ghosts? Olivia should be haunted. Extremely, extremely haunted, my her mother, and Kathy, and Alex who's not dead but just as unreachable (or is she?)

Psychological Horror: I'm not necessarily gonna say 'Olivia's entire life' but honestly? Kinda Liv's entire life.

Supernatural Horror: I'm thinking vampire AU. (Vampire: The Requiem AU if you wanna get real specific). I know I'm always thinking about vampire AUs, but this is just a very good canon for it.

Under the Pendulum Sun - Jeannette Ng

General: Clockwork Fairyland! What is there not to love? This weird little book snuck into my life and ruined me in the best way possible and I would love to be further ruined by any fic you write! I really, really loved the Changeling!Cathy faux-reveal and was a bit put out by its last-chapter reversal (all books can do with more weird changelings, lbr), so any Changeling!Cathy fic - or fic where she's human but grappling with the fact that she enjoyed elements of the time when she thought she was a soulless creature - is always adored. I ship all requested & combinations, and am always happy for background Cathy/Laon. here are the tags I requested for all these ships in Femslash Kink last year.

Requested Ships/Characters:
  • Ariel Davenport

  • Catherine Helstone & Mab | The Pale Queen

  • Ariel Davenport & Mab | The Pale Queen

  • Kasdaye & Mab | The Pale Queen

  • Kasdaye & Catherine Helstone

  • Ariel Davenport & Catherine Helstone

Body Horror: I would be delighted by either body horror that leans into the clockwork/steampunk side of things or body horror that leans into the animal/nature side. Living tattoos, needleplay and wound fingering during sex, anything about the creation of changelings or interactions between changelings and the people they replace.

Dark Fantasy: This is probably fairly close to canon tone - I'd love something post-canon, exploring Cathy & Laon's lives in Pivot

Folk Horror: Arcadian cults! Mab isn't the only queen, and who knows what Cathy and Laon might stumble into if they leave her city (or get kicked out?). Or just canon-but-a-different-setting - listen, I do quite love Laon, but in terms of people who would end up in a giant Wicker Man? Yeah, he'd end up there, and I'd delight in reading Cathy's attempts to save him or how she helps Mab put him there equally. Arcadian regional or urban horror: what do Changelings and Fae scare each other with? I was very much not sold on the Arcadia = Literal Hell ending, even though it's obvious why Cathy would make that assumption, but what does Arcadian history and legend feel like to the people who live there?

Gothic Horror: Is this where I mention how much I'd love creepy Fae arranged marriages? For any combination of my requested characters. Arcadia has plenty of big crumbling houses with secrets, and add in marriages and forced companionship and it's even more perfect.

Killer Horror: I LOVED the Hunt, and would love to see more of it/them - a Hunt that finds its targets already killed by something else, maybe? Ariel come back to life and looking for revenge? A killer stalking Pivot that Cathy gets caught up trying to stop?

Paranormal Horror: Ghosts! Do ghosts exist in Arcadia? Can changelings become ghosts? I would love Ariel haunting Cathy or Mab, or Mab giving Cathy and Laon a place to stay that's filled with ghosts. This would also be a really fun way to play with Kasdaye's fortune telling - things she's spoken into existence, things that don't really exist that hover at the edges of her awareness...

Psychological Horror: Well, Mab is pretty much the definition of this! Any of her manipulating Cathy or Ariel, whether that's controlling Cathy in Pivot post-canon or calling Ariel back from the mortal world pre-canon. Also, again, really great for Kasdaye and creepy dreams. Also a really great opportunity for pre-canon stuff set back in the regular world, like Ariel setting traps for Cathy to lead her to Mab or Changeling!Cathy reckoning with mortal!Cathy. Arcadia's reality is malleable - what gets changed and rewritten as Cathy negotiates life in Pivot?

Supernatural Horror: Changelings and Fae are generally considered supernatural to us, so what do Changelings and Fae consider to be supernatural? Any in-depth exploration of the way witchcraft and magic functions in Arcadia - yes, it kind of just exists, but how are people trained in its use? Also please consider fae vampires. I just love the concept. I am placing it gently into your hand and asking you to consider how horrifying and excellent it would be.

Survival Horror: Again, anything from the Hunt(s) - Ariel's perspective, maybe, or an original target in a Hunt Mab manipulates Cathy into leading. Or, Cathy stranded somewhere in Arcadia trying to make her way back to the questionable safety of Pivot or Gethsemane.

Violent Horror: I know I keep prompting for more Hunts but really truly they are good for so many types of horror!
