beside the rotting river-strand [innumerable stars 2019]
Hello friend, it is time for Tolkien fic and I am so excited to see what you will write for me! If you want inspiration beyond this letter I am also
kimaracretak, where I have a small but reflective-of-things-I-like set of bookmarks, and kimaracretak on 8tracks if you want #aesthetic musical inspiration.
I love Tolkien for the worldbuilding and mytharcs as well as their characters and relationships, and I am easy to please as long as you stay away from my DNWs (both general and canon-specific), so don't feel like you Have to write any of my specific prompts. Don't read anything into relative lengths of sections, I am equally happy to get something for anything in this letter! Some of these prompts are reused from old letters, and if you have written them for me before, rest assured that I loved your fic, I am simply greedy and would like to see every possible take on my favourite scenarios. A lot of my prompts are very horror-slanted, I suppose because it's August and I'm in the Samhaim Mood already, but if your muse is inclined to things less murderous, feel free!
I love everything from short introspection bits to long plotty missionfic to sex scenes as ways to explore character/setting/worldbuilding, and I don't need a lot of romance in my ships: sex for power, manipulation, or just between friends who want to have fun is also great. Please no unrequested ships unless specifically allowed for, but feel free to combine any compatible ones from my requested ones.

General: It's the 'drop Goldberry into the Silm' request set! I always forget she's technically LotR based instad of Silm/Histories based, she feels more Silm-y to me with the edges of danger and possibility than the frozen decay of the Third Age. Just write me eldritch Goldberry and I'm totally happy!
Worldbuilding: Portals & passageways
Goldberry & Lalaith: Undead ghostbaby Lalaith is such a good Lalaith, and I would love to see anything with her and my favourite creepily cheerful river spirit! Goldberry helps Lalaith adjust to being dead, the two of them playing tricks on unwary travelers, Goldberry helping Lalaith get revenge - everything's good! Lalaith-survives and/or Lalaith brought back wrong AUs are also great, especially if Goldberry is the cause of either of those things.
Goldberry & or / Melian: Doriath creepyfun times! I like the idea that Goldberry as something distinctly Other can pass through the Girdle without any trouble at all, and would love to see some exploration of that. What does she bring with her, and how does that contribute to the general atmosphere there? Alternately, something before things became quite so grim: magic lessons, time spent together in the darkness under the stars 'when it was fearless' pre-Thingol or Dark Lords, Goldberry finding her way into Melian & Thingol's 'enchantment of their own making' and jealously stealing Melian away so Thingol's Stuck and Melian has to live with that.
Goldberry/Aredhel: Aredhel deserves freedom, and Goldberry as either a literal personification of a river or a river-spirit is exactly that. Adventures together, murdering Eol together, enjoying a day in the river with no other concerns. Alternately, dark!Aredhel hunting Goldberry and getting in over her head, the two of them ruling Nan Elmoth together, Goldberry resurrects Aredhel in Gondolin and things get Even Worse.
Goldberry/Celebrian: I'm fond of adventures during the early days of Celebrian's settling in Lothlorien, but I'm up for anything, really! H/c fic set post-Orcs, Celebrian comes to Goldberry seeking refuge from a Galadriel who took the ring (or who became a dark queen earlier) - perhaps it works, perhaps it doesn't.
Goldberry/Nimrodel: Nimrodel lost? No. Nimrodel and Goldberry being eldritch, possibly dubiously-consensual girlfriends. Perhaps Goldberry comes to her while she sleeps beside the river Gilrain (dream sex?), perhaps Nimrodel drowns like her lover and Goldberry traps her ghost underwater. Goldberry helps some kind of Nandorin revenge for what has become of Lothlorien? Feel free to OT3 them with Mithrellas.
General: I am here mostly for the creepy things in the forest, and for the (maybe fewer) creepy things under the lake! I tend to think the movies were a bit, hm, too on-the-nose with the whole 'hello naughty dwarves it is Scary Mirkwood Time' thing, and prefer stories about the slowly growing horror of things that aren't Quite Right (think: Necromancer as menacing skeleton-in-shadows rather than Necromancer-as-giant-firey-ball-of-sfx).
Worldbuilding: Daily life of the Mirkwood Guard (Hobbit Movies), The effects of Smaug's corpse on the surrounding nature/towns, The Greenwood becoming Mirkwood (Hobbit Movies), The magic of the Elves of Mirkwood, The ruins of Lake-Town
Tauriel: Tauriel of the wind and stars and leaves and nighttime dances by the waters, I love her madly and she deserves far more in both background and life than PJ gave her. Tauriel a weird fey gift from the forest, Tauriel something a spider spat out after it ate her parents, Tauriel with maybe some ties to Lorien (where else did that name come from), Tauriel who has the forest and the forest and nothing else, alone with Thranduil as the trees slowly swallow them at the end of all things. Shipwise, beyond the requested ships I especially like her with Galadriel and Goldberry, love all creepy-angsty gen of her with Thranduil or Legolas, and don't really love her with ... whatever fanon decided the Rivendell harp lady's name is. Angry Moriquendi ghosts? Hungry trees? Just. Tauriel with a real story.
Tauriel/Sigrid: I like through-the-years style fics for them - slowly growing closer as Laketown rebuilds and the corruption receeds from Mirkwood. Sigrid settling into her new role as leader of the town, Tauriel there to offer advice. Horror is also excellent, especially dealing with Smaug's corpse and Things Under The Lake. Bad ends, vampires, reanimated dragon corpses, Mirkwood deciding that since Tauriel likes Sigrid Sigrid must be captured and presented to her.
Tauriel/Original Female Mirkwood Guard(s): What's day to day life like in the forest? Adventures, murders, befriending hungry trees, all that fun stuff :D. How do the rituals of the Guard change as the world darkens? Anything from human sacrifice to thank-the-stars-we-survived fluffy porn, honestly.
Tauriel/Original Female Avarin: Fey Tauriel is m'fave, fey Avarin are m'faves, I would love something fey and worldbuilding-y of them together!
Worldbuilding: Hauntings of Middle-earth - Third Age, Nature Spirits of Middle-earth, Motivations of Sentient Trees, The creation of Barrow-wights
Barrow-wight(s): I love ... ghosts ... Who were the wights? How were they created? Who do they eat? &c.
Houseless Elves: Disembodied creepyelves yessss. Lean as much into the eldritch horror/cosmic wars as you like :}
The Dead of Dunharrow: [Chants] ghosts ghosts ghosts! I'd love something about their time before Aragorn summoned them - previous hauntings, life in the city, &c. Bonus for including women among them, double bonus for including female Dead interacting with f!Malbeth.
Goldberry & Belladonna Took: I just want Belladonna running into Goldberry on one of her adventures! Feel free to make it as fun or as horror-filled as you like! Casefic-y haunts in the ruins are great, tea-and-cakes in the cottage are great, ghost!Belladonna is great ... I'll be delighted with anything.
Goldberry & Tom Bombadil & Old Man Willow: Just ... straight-up forest horror/survival horror, tbh. How do they work together to trap unwary hobbits or battle each other for control over their bits of the Old Forest, how did they first meet, how did they learn each other's weak points, who killed the lady of the blue brooch to try to one-up Goldberry and how did she and the third member of the trio get revenge?
Goldberry/Arwen: Personally I love this the most when it's old tired end-of-the-world Arwen who's lost all things and Goldberry is there to ease (or, hm, not ease, perhaps :}) her death, but AUs where Arwen did not choose mortality are excellent as well. Vampire AUs? Resurrection-gone-wrong AUs? Something about the horror of Arwen choosing death and then having death wearing Goldberry's face reject her? I'm [vague handwavy gesture] about Aragorn/Arwen the ship, so feel free to presume Aragorn's death/nonexistence/total consent to his wife having fun sleeping with the personification of a river as you like!
Goldberry/Galadriel: Galadriel has sea-magic, and Goldberry's rivers run to the sea, so there's sort of inbuilt potential for commonality, there. I like Dark Queen Galadriel AUs and fic that explores the darker side of Lothlorien's sea-magic-preservation, but I'm also up for fun Doriath adventures, or anything else.
Goldberry/Lady of the Blue Brooch: Angst or fun or anything in-between! I like ghost stories and stories where the Lady becomes a Black Rider and sensation-play/breathplay-focussed sex.
Old Man Willow: What can I say, I like vaguely-and-probably-justifiably malevolent trees winning! Trees that want to eat you are my favourite trees, and Old Man Willow is no exception! Tell me about his history - was he an Ent or a Huorn or a trapped spirit? Did he learn magic, or teach other trees? When did he first meet Tom Bombadil and realise he could be controlled, how many hobbits has he ensnared, what does he think about Goldberry and other river-spirits? What happens to the people that he swallows? Something drawing inspiration from the barrow-wight's chant, or something involving the Mewlips - is underneath Old Man Willow's roots where the Mewlips dwell? But, yknow, creepy trees! I'll be honest, mostly what I am thinking here is CHOMP. Unfortunate original hobbits, bad-end attempted chomping of Goldberry where they become some world-breaking fusion THING, AU where Merry or someone gets chomped early on in the Fellowship's adventures. But I will be genuinely happy with everything.
Queen Beruthiel's Cats: I love them as cats or as otherworldly Sauron-made Things or Maiar or ... anything! Adventures with Beruthiel, adventures in the city, gruesome-gorgeous transformation sequences. Folk horror and ritual! Why did they stick around in so many peoples' memories for so long?
Worldbuilding: Cosmology, Elves at the End of the World, Elven magic & technology, Hauntings of Middle-earth, Ice and Darkness, In-universe history and lore, Nan Dungortheb, Nature spirits and sentient nature, Magic in Doriath, Sentient Jewellery, Song power, Vampires and Skin-Changers
Aredhel/Thuringwethil: I amn't sure it's possible for me to be disappointed with anything for them, tbh. Eldritch marrieds running a crossroads inn and eating patrons who stay too long? Thuringwethil finding out the hard way that she's not the most dangerous thing in the woods? Aredhel barters with Thuringwethil for safe passage for her or her people and gets in over her head. Aredhel is tired of her life with Eol and asks to be turned into a vampire (the two of them working together to kill him in turn optional). Aredhel
Arien/Thuringwethil: Weird sad universes wrapped in human and/or bat skin being sad together, y/y? I love how very Other they are even for Maia/possibly-Maia (personally I love vampires/skin-changers as something different even than Maia), and I'd love something exploring that.
Celebrían/Nimrodel: I love this especially when Celebrían's first come to Lorien, especially when paired with both of their fraught relationships with Galadriel. Very happy for this to be in the same fic as Galadriel/Nimrodel for angst, or a happy OT3 with Mithrellas.
Eilinel/Thuringwethil: Vampire Eilinel! Wraith Eilinel! Eilinel and Thuringwethil team up to make mischief against Sauron! Eilinel gets lonely while her husband is off and wanders too far into the woods! Eilinel escapes Sauron's captivity and runs into Thuringwethil's! Eilinel escapes Sauron's captivity and sets off for revenge against Thuringwethil! Roleswap where Eilinel's in Gorlim's place! Enemy lovers/Thuringwethil helps her escape for Reasons. Just something vast and weird and gorgeous.
Galadriel/Melian: I love play with power dynamics for these two, whether that's something that leans into Melian-as-teacher and how eager Galadriel is to please her, or Melian being surprised by how much untapped/untamed power Galadriel has. Feel free to go as creepy or not with the mentor/student dynamics as you like - Melian is rather peak #unavailable older woman in position of authority, but she's also, yknow, a Maia and therefore has questionable notions of 'appropriate'. Magic lessons, storytelling, HONOUR BONDAGE, creepy nature, adventures beyond the Girdle.
Galadriel/Nimrodel: I'm really interested in the gradual (or perhaps not-so-gradual) takeover of Lothlorien, and how Galadriel and Nimrodel's relationship might affect/change because of that. Nimrodel is such a symbol of the Nandor forest, how did she feel when Galadriel's magic took hold? Did she try to fight back? Eldritch!Nimrodel always fun, as is a far-future reunion.
Haleth/Lúthien: Haladrim worldbuilding? Doriath adventures? Eldar!Luthien/Immortal-for-eldritch-reasons!Haleth? Something something vampires? I'm up for anything!
Ilmarë/Thuringwethil: Sharp-edged reunions during the War of the Wrath, perhaps? Jealousy about losing their lover to the light/dark, attempts to bring the other round to their side of things (dubcon and/or 'we're both super going to regret this later' sex encouraged). I like stories where they knew each other pre-Middle-earth and perhaps stayed together way past the time they knew the other was lost, out of inertia or love or something in between.
Luthien/Thuringwethil: Someone tagged a Luthien/Thuringwethil fic 'world's worst selkie' a while ago and you know what? I agree, and I'd love something that delves into that, whether it's selkie-style vampires or a full-on Arda-set selkie!AU. And, on the topic of Thuringwethil's skin, I am super into the idea that Thuringwethil lived on somehow in her skin and slowly possessed Luthien more and more. Beyond that, any sort of mind games, situations where Thuringwethil turns Luthien. The two of them chasing each other through all the ages of Arda killing each other closer and closer to death each time! Epistolary fic! Gore and bloody sex!
Nimrodel/Mithrellas: Friends-as-lovers happily-ever-after fic is always fun, as is anything where 'lost' Nimrodel is actually some kind of ghost/eldritch nature entity.
Thuringwethil/Varda: Weird sad creation-type goddess-creatures (okay so Thuringwethil isn't technically ... but What If)! I love legend-style or epistolary-style things for them.
General: Numenor fun (or not so fun!) times! I love the idea of a land in decay, of politics slowly growing more and more twisted and faith growing more and more improbable. Some of these are prompts for character who dies in canon survives AUs, but that survival doesn't have to mean anything is better :3
Worldbuilding: Hauntings of Middle-earth, Late Numenor, Nature spirits and sentient nature, Númenor & Lindon, Survival at Sea
Elwing/Uinen, Elwing/Varda: Putting these together because I want really the same thing for both of them: eldritch Elwing, Elwing winning things, AUs where Elwing had Earendil's role as a Mariner, Elwing being turned into something Strange via the Silmaril - yknow, spooky adventures!
Erendis/Uinen: I love enemy lovers, and they are an excellent ship for that! All the antagonism, the hungry ocean, the very real conflicts that only fuel desire. AUs where Erendis
Tar-Miriel/Uinen: I tend to see this as Miriel saved by Uinen and coming back wrong (Witch-King!Miriel is always good!), or perhaps Miriel turning more and more to Uinen before the Fall, and Numenor surviving but Nothing being better.
Tar-Miriel/Varda: Came back wrong is good as always, as are sea-voyages and sea-ghosts and star-navigation and complicated desires that are not as strong as either wish they were.
I love Tolkien for the worldbuilding and mytharcs as well as their characters and relationships, and I am easy to please as long as you stay away from my DNWs (both general and canon-specific), so don't feel like you Have to write any of my specific prompts.
