Why You Shouldn't Buy a MacBook Pro Right Now

Posted by Michelle Ehrhardt

We may earn a commission from links on this page.

Speaking as someone who almost pulled the trigger on one this weekend, if you're planning on buying a new MacBook Pro right now, don't do it. According to inside information seen by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, new models are right around the corner. The news came in the latest edition of Gurman's Power On newsletter, a frequent and usually correct source on all things Apple. According to the reporter's sources at the company, new models of MacBook Pro are currently set to come out sometime during the macOS 26.3 release cycle, which will last from February through March.

The new laptops will supposedly keep the same form factor, but will feature newer chips, likely the M5 Pro and M5 Max. That means more performance for power users. Currently, you can only buy a MacBook Pro with either an entry-level M5 chip, and if you want a little bit more power, you'll have to settle for either the M4 Pro or M4 Max, both of which are last gen. Also, the base M5 chip is not available on the 16-inch MacBook Pro, although that's unlikely to change in the new release.

If Gurman's sources are correct, the new MacBooks would be coming out a bit earlier in the year than you might expect, at least going by the last time the MacBook Pro got pro-level chips, which was in October of 2024. However, if you try to buy a MacBook Pro with an M4 Max chip on Apple's website right now, you'll notice shipping delays into the end of February and, in some cases, early March. Gurman also says that his sources are also reporting that the current MacBook Pro is starting to sell out at Apple Stores around the world. Both of these points seem to show that Apple isn't bothering to restock dwindling inventory anymore, which would hint towards a new launch being imminent.

That's great news for Apple power users who want to eke a bit more performance out of their machines, but I'm a little disappointed that there's no mention of OLED or touchscreens in this report, both of which were rumored to potentially start production this year. Still, even going by those earlier rumors, the start of 2026 would be an optimistic timetable for these features—we might expect them closer to either the end of year or early next year.

Apple users might be concerned about the new models releasing during the ongoing RAM crisis, which could theoretically see prices go up. However, according to a separate report from other famed Apple leaker Ming-Chi Kuo, it seems the company is planning to eat rising RAM costs itself rather than pass them on to consumers, at least for its next iPhone. I can't say whether that'll also be the case for the next MacBook, but as Apple will likely stop selling the previous models once the new ones are out, it seems likely to me.

Speaking of previous models, even if you don't necessarily need Apple's latest and greatest chips, I would still hold off on buying until the new models are announced. That's because existing M4 Pro and M4 Max units that are already in stock at sites like Amazon are likely to go down in price immediately afterwards. According to price-tracking sites, these seem to have been unaffected by the RAM crisis so far, and are favorite discounts during deals events like Prime Day. No longer being the latest and greatest means discounts are likely to become even more common, as these stores push to move their remaining stock and give customers a compelling reason to not opt for Apple's slightly newer chips instead.

Watch ‘Resident Evil Requiem’ Short Film Starring Maika Monroe

Posted by Alex DiVincenzo

Evil has always had a name in the live-action short film promoting Resident Evil Requiem.

Genre favorite Maika Monroe (Longlegs, It Follows) stars in the three and a half-minute ad directed by Rich Lee (War of the Worlds 2025).

“What I loved about it was it had a lot of heart,” Monroe tells EW. “It’s really heartbreaking, the story that you’re watching unfold. I just thought it was a really interesting and a new way to portray this video game coming out.”

A new era of survival horror begins when Resident Evil Requiem launches February 27 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Steam, Epic Games Store, and NVIDIA GeForce.

In the ninth title in Capcom’s mainline Resident Evil series, a body has surfaced at an abandoned hotel in the Midwest, the latest in a mysterious string of deaths throughout the United States.

FBI intelligence analyst Grace Ashcroft has been assigned to the case—in the same place where her mother was murdered eight years prior. But when word gets out that a police officer has gone missing at the hotel, veteran agent Leon S. Kennedy is also dispatched to the scene.

As Grace and Leon’s paths converge, they must face their pasts and uncover the truth behind the Raccoon City Incident that changed the world forever. But while the terrors of their memories echo in their minds, will they relive the nightmare…or finally offer up a requiem for the dead?

On the film front, Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot opens in theaters on September 18.

It was Saturday, and Mellina had invited Rim and the other REAL players to hang out again. Rim, of course, had volunteered to let everyone stay at his place while he cooked a delicious dinner.

"Well, it's… I can't let my cooking skills fade away, right? And, when I see someone eating my food, and looking super happy, it's almost like I'm eating the food along with them!"

"Food voyeur," Mellina chuckled to herself as soon as she thought of the name."

Fannish options & enthusiasms | February 2026

Here are some recent fannish things I've happened to see and would like to share!

Spotlight: I'm four episodes into the new Marvel Wonderman. It reminds me again how much I wish we could go back to "television" releasing one episode per week, many episodes per year. This streaming model doesn't allow viewers to build relationships with characters or each other. I can't consume or contribute to any discussions yet, because I've seen "only" four episodes (in less than a week). And by the time I catch up, everyone will have moved on. Granted, I feel strongly that Disney/Marvel should have approached its TV shows, from the start, as an anthology series, a la PBS's Masterpiece or The Wonderful World of Disney. That's a familiar model viewers would have understood and known how to engage with. Retrofitting it now as "Spotlight" may be too little, too late. I'm not asking that every story run for seven seasons, of course! But a big part of what makes TV different from movies, and precious to us, is the stories' presences in our lives as we live them through time.

Ficathons, fests & communities

  • Create & engage
    • [community profile] halfamoon, the 14-day challenge celebrating female characters, is in progress!
    • [community profile] small_fandoms has a drabble-athon throughout February. ("Smallness" here is not by Yuletide metrics, but by reasonableness and on the honor system for present participation.)
    • [community profile] pinchhitbingo is a rolling challenge to help out communities and support fellow fans by filling pinch hits (that is, exchange drops and unmatchables).
    • [community profile] videogamefanworks is a community for sharing assorted fanworks and fanwork recs for any video game or visual novel.
    • [community profile] allbingo's February theme is "Valentine's Day" (love and loss).
    • [community profile] trope_of_the_month has not yet posted its February theme.
    • [community profile] pinchhits is a community for posting needed fills for exchanges. For example, [community profile] traumaticexperiences is currently seeking pinch hitters.
    • [community profile] whenisitdue tracks many more events than I note here!
  • Enjoy & share

Sidelight: I've begun playing Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical, which is a choose-your-own-adventure visual novel murder mystery urban fantasy Greek gods retelling with full-on musical numbers that you direct and redirect as they are sung. So far, so good. Not good, it has no key to the chapter controls anywhere I can find. Three chapters in, I'm still struggling. I am not at all a savvy gamer, but this seems... not entirely my fault? A key to the controls, somewhere in the settings menus, is not an unreasonable ask, even for a multi-platform game, is it? (What is the tab sequence?)

Minnie Mouse Slasher ‘Minnie’s Midnight Massacre’ Set for February Release

Posted by Alex DiVincenzo

Minnie Mouse is the latest public domain character to become a slasher villain in Minnie’s Midnight Massacre.

The indie horror film will be released on Digital February 24 via ITN Distribution, the outfit behind the Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey franchise.

After being trapped for two decades in a mouse-infested storm shelter following a cruel bullying prank, a now-grown Minnie is finally unleashed. Consumed by years of isolation and rage, she tracks down her former tormentors during their lakeside camping retreat.

What was meant to be a nostalgic weekend for the group turns into a gruesome fight for survival as Minnie executes her bloody revenge, systematically eliminating them one by one.

Brett Bentman — who also helmed the upcoming Betty Boop horror movie Betty’s Revenge — writes and directs.

Hannah Hueston, Cliff Dean, and Indira Starr star with Tiffany McDonald as Minnie.

Derrick Redford of Redford Films and Tiffany McDonald of B22 Films produce.

“We wanted to bring the black and white sidekick to life,” said Bentman. “We’d see Willie in all these reimaginings, but what about Minnie? Why not give her some spotlight?”

Minnie Mouse is also slated to appear in Screamboat 2.

Snowflake Challenge: A flatlay of a snowflake shaped shortbread cake, a mug with coffee, and a string of holiday lights on top of a rustic napkin.

Challenge #8

Talk about your creative process.

You know, I don't think I've ever sat down and thought through my creative process before. This should be fun.

My solo-written fic, as opposed to my cowrites (/waves to [personal profile] rhi , [personal profile] ilyena_sylph , [personal profile] t_vo0810 and others/) is one of two kinds, usually: either it's written for an exchange fic, or a bunny ups and grabs me.

When I sign up for exchanges, I try and craft my sign-up to get specific recipients, although I try and make sure that I can write for all potential recipicients. (I've only hit 'oh God no DEFAULT' levels of DNW a couple of times, which considering my Cursed Exchange Luck, I'm pretty proud of.) Once I get my assignment, I sit with the prompt that calls to me the most, and see what kind of story I can create that fits both the wordcount requirement and what the recip wants. Depending on how much plot there is, I throw myself on rhi's mercy for help, lol.

Once I've figured out what the story is, then I write it. Very rarely, I finish my first draft before deadline; usually I'm butting right up to it. (Being several hours ahead is a wonderful thing, sometimes. It feels like a sneaky little extension, lol.) I use the period between submission deadline and reveals to edit and polish my fic, although (thankfully) I write very clean drafts so there's rarely all that much editing, SPAG aside, to do. Sometimes my brain is a hunk of mouldy cheese and poor [personal profile] rhi has to talk me down and remind me that I am a good writer and my fic will look better once I have had a snack and a nap.

When it comes to non-exchange fic, it usually starts with a bunny nibbling on me. Once the nibbling becomes too hard to ignore, I sit down and write - sometimes just scenes, sometimes snippets, sometimes whole-ass fic. Then I let the for-publishing stuff sit for a few days before going back over it, then getting it beta'd.

Regardless of whether it's exchange fic or for my own satisfaction, there's one step of the process I find utterly loathsome: titles. There's a reason most of my fics have either lyrics or quotes for titles - titling is the worst, even harder than summaries. I am in awe of people who find it easy. But works need titles, alas, and so far I've somehow managed, lol.

And that's my creative process! Feel free to ask me any questions you may have.

February!

February marks the first month of the solar spring season. It's still the heart of winter for me, but I'm looking forward to more sunlight. The sun sets at 5pm now instead of 4pm, which I appreciate. February tends to be a tad sunnier than November, December and January, though that also depends on the temperature. Temperatures of -20°C or below are welcome because it means sunny days.

The Holiday season is when the days are the shortest of the year. It gets to me every time. Though what gets to me the most are cloudy days. Québec, especially the southern bits, is very cloudy in winter. The gloominess is what impacts my morale the most. I enjoy greyness every now and then, especially in summer, but autumn and winter greyness starts to be too much at some point.

I'm not looking forward to slush season, however.

Heeeey Sexah LAY-DAY

Posted by Jen

Don't worry, this isn't going to be a Gangnam Style parody. Promise. It's just that every time I see one of those "baby bump" limbless torso cakes trying so desperately to be sexy, that's all I hear in my head:

"HEEEEEY SEXAH LAY-DAY!"

Plus now I can't stop picturing Psy screaming at all the fondant boobies:

I feel ya, man.

But enough about me. Let's talk about why so many women enjoy displaying edible effigies of their nearly naked torsos for a bunch of other women while celebrating the imminent expulsion of a human being from their bodies.

(When you put it like that, it's kind of messed up, right?)

And while I'll never think pregnant torso cakes are a good idea, at least the ones wearing clothing are a little LESS tacky. The "sexy" ones just make me wonder: who gets all hot and bothered looking at a dismembered pregnant torso?

Before you get too turned on, you should know that the fetus with the unnaturally long spaghetti leg is watching you. Aaaalwaaaays waaaaatching.

That one's not really showing enough skin, though, is it? And don't you think it needs a nice heavy spray tan, too?

Muuuuch better. We'll all be revisiting breakfast in NO time.

(If you look at that just right, you'll see a jowly guy in an aviator cap whistling Dixie around a mouth full of feet. Just sayin'.)

Hey ladies, you know how sometimes we get that little bead of sweat betwixt our womanly bazooms? And you know how the sight of it on other women make you, like, totally hungry?

Mmmm. Sweaty bazoom valley.

(Also, if that lady is pregnant, then I must be expecting twins.)

If I still haven't convinced you that "sexy" torso cakes are a bad idea, though, then let me leave you with this little window into the future:

Peek-a-boo!  SEE YOU REAL SOON.

Thanks to Cyndi P., Matt R., Anony M., Kate C., Jason S., & Vicki K. for the sexy, sexy nightmare fuel.

First Look at ‘Halloween’s Andi Matichak as AI Assistant in ‘Serena’

Posted by Alex DiVincenzo

The first images of Andi Matichak (Halloween 2018) and Steven Strait (“The Expanse”) in Serena have been revealed.

The sci-fi thriller will have its world premiere at the Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose, California, on March 13.

Strait stars as Chris Sadowski, whose life is already falling apart — a dead music career, eviction looming, and a baby on the way — when he agrees to beta test a new AI assistant. Enter Serena (Matichak): intuitive, personable, and far more interested in him than expected.

Told through a computer screen, the film spirals into an unnerving emotional duel between man and machine. As Serena begins anticipating Chris’s needs — and exploiting his vulnerabilities — the line between support and control dissolves. What begins as a lifeline slowly tightens into something far more dangerous.

Ashleigh Murray (“Riverdale”), María Gabriela González (“Fantasy Island”), Tyrone Marshall Brown (“Power”), and Nicole M. Gut round out the cast.

Rob Alicea directs from a script by P.T. Hylton and Jonathan Benecke, marking all three of their feature debuts.

“What started as a small idea between my writing partner and me has grown into a grounded, near‑future sci‑fi story that we poured our hearts into,” said Hylton. “The journey from first draft to festival premiere has been exhilarating, unpredictable, and one of the most creatively fulfilling experiences of my career.”

Producers include Jerry Careccio of Bad Idea, Scarlett Camargo of Leaving Normal Productions, and Brodrick Haygood from Moon Howler.

Bloober Team Updates Mysterious Countdown Website

Posted by Mike Wilson

Bloober Team is keeping things interesting with that mysterious countdown website they had launched at the beginning of last month. The website has undergone a bit of a facelift, now featuring a rose logo and an ominous message to go along with the countdown timer.

The rose logo, which if you move your mouse over it, will change to a dripping version that appears to be bleeding (which seems fitting, given the countdown expires just after Valentine’s Day on February 15 at 12:00 a.m. ET). There’s also a cryptic phrase just below the logo, “Some things never leave the walls. They only learn to wait.” To add even more confusion, hitting the “Play” button starts a broken recording of someone reciting the William Blake poem, “The Sick Rose”.

“Thou art sick… invisible flies in the night… Howling storm has found out thy bed of crimson joy… Dark secret thy life destroy.”

Obviously, these new additions have some on the internet now speculating that one of the projects that Bloober Team is working on (in addition to the remake of the original Silent Hill) is Punchline’s 2006 PlayStation 2 psychological horror title, Rule of Rose. However, a remake of Rule of Rose doesn’t appear to be the case, despite the rose commonality. This still leaves the option open to it being a potential new entry in the Layers of Fear series, or a brand new IP altogether.

Once again, we’ll have to see just what Bloober Team is cooking on February 15th.

Movie: The Thursday Murder Club

By no means am I a professional movie reviewer, but I do often wonder why not. I don't mean that I want to do that as a career, more like I wonder what kind of credentials are expected from those who do. Everything looks simple from the outside but are complex nevertheless, and movie reviews are probably no different. I secretly think reviewers of all ilks are too full of themselves (nobody cares what you think) and tend to exude moral superiority where none is present (AKA: "I would never give a perfect review because nothing is perfect."). Art in all forms is so subjective that I have to wonder what use reviews serve at all. But, I digress...

Hollywood has one thing right; people will watch movies based on the cast. I had no real interest in the Thursday Murder Club, but it has such a great cast, aside from Ben Kingsley who I find cringey, that I gave it a whirl.

Aside: Dreamwidth has a really poor selection of editors. I prefer markdown by a mile, but there appears to be no "cut" token in markdown. It only exists in HTML mode, but I am really not into typing <em> some text</em> over _ some text _. I thought I could write an entry in markdown then switch to html to put the cut tag in, but the editor lost half my entry when I did that so I guess that's not a plan. But I digress again...

I liked the movie, almost entirely because of the cast. The retirement home is quite the place and I enjoyed thinking that one day perhaps I could retire to such a place, but mostly it was the cast. The story was very linear, easy to follow, and the writer kept checking in with us to make sure we were keeping up. I felt like I could leave the room for 10 minutes and come back to shortly be updated and thus not miss a thing. That is great if you do leave the room, but makes for a very tame ride if you don't.

The plot is quite simple, there is something that I think is supposed to be a twist or surprise ending but it doesn't land with any aplomb so it doesn't add any spice to the movie.

It reminded me a lot of the series Only Murders in the Building on CBC. Like reminds me a lot. I did not hate it, but I will likely forget that I saw it in a few days. Most shows or movies leave me with a silly phrase or something like that I use for a while after watching, but this one did not. There is very little to remember about this movie despite the stellar cast.

Everything We Think We Know About the Samsung Galaxy S26 Series

Posted by David Nield

It's been more than a year since the Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25 Plus, and Galaxy S25 Ultra were unveiled, which means we're overdue some new flagship phones from Samsung. While nothing has been officially revealed about the Galaxy S26, a number of leaks and rumors that have appeared online, providing a pretty good idea of what to expect.

With the caveat that none of this is confirmed (though this information all comes from well-known tipsters with decent track records when it comes to future Samsung products), here's everything the rumors are telling us right now. We'll know how much of it is spot-on once the devices are announced—perhaps as soon as the end of this month.

What rumors say about the Samsung Galaxy S26 series' launch date and pricing

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S25 phones on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025, and they then went on sale on Friday, Feb. 7. We're already into February 2026, and there's still no word about the Galaxy S26 series, so for whatever reason, Samsung hasn't been able to stick to the same schedule that it used last year for its flagship phones' launch.

Still, we should see these handsets appear before we're too much further into 2026. According to information obtained by the team at Dealabs, Samsung is planning to hold a launch event on Wednesday, Feb. 25—which would align with the day of the week that Samsung usually likes to hold its Unpacked events.

That date has been repeated by veteran leaker Evan Blass, so it looks as certain as anything can be without any official confirmation. There will then be a short preorder period before the phones actually go on sale, as usual, and the Galaxy S26 series is being tipped to start shipping on Wednesday, March 11.

As for pricing, it would seem that these Galaxy S26 handsets are going to cost you as much as their Galaxy S25 counterparts did when they first came out. Several sources, including reports from South Korean media, predict the following starting prices: $799 for the Galaxy S26, $999 for the Galaxy S26 Plus, and $1,299 for the Galaxy S26 Ultra.

What rumors say about the Samsung Galaxy S26 series' design

The three models we're expecting—the standard model, the Plus model, and the Ultra model—match up with what Samsung has done in previous years, including 2025. It's possible that we'll see a more affordable FE (Fan Edition) version of the Galaxy S26 later in the year—the Samsung Galaxy S25 FE launched in September 2025.

What we're probably not going to see is a Samsung Galaxy S26 Edge. The Galaxy S25 Edge, the thinnest Galaxy phone to date, broke cover in May 2025, measuring just 5.8mm front to back. However, multiple sources (including the well-respected Jukan) suggest that sluggish sales have led to the model being dropped this year. (It seems demand is weak for the iPhone Air as well.)

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7

When it comes to the designs of these phones, we're not expecting much to change at all. Android Headlines has posted renders for the 6.3-inch Galaxy S26, the 6.7-inch Galaxy S26 Plus, and the 6.9-inch Galaxy S26 Ultra: That's a slight increase in screen size (from 6.2 inches) for the standard model compared to the Galaxy S25, but the other two look like they'll have the same sized displays as their predecessors.

The only real change in terms of aesthetics is a pill-shaped camera island on the back. This was missing on the Galaxy S25 series, but did show up on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7. Multiple colors have been rumored, in part through wallpaper leaks: They include gray, peach, purple, light blue, black, and silver for the standard model, and black, white, silver shadow, sky blue, cobalt violet, and pink gold for the Ultra model.

What rumors say about the Samsung Galaxy S26 series' specs and features

The Samsung Galaxy S26 phones will come with the standard processor speed bump: As reported by SamMobile, it looks as though the handsets are going to be fitted with a mix of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 from Qualcomm, and Samsung's own Exynos 2600 processor, depending on region. If previous years are any indication, all the handsets sold in the US will have Snapdragon CPUs inside.

Don't expect massive leaps forward in terms of cameras: According to The Elec in South Korea, the Galaxy S26 cameras will match those on the Galaxy S25 (50MP main, 12MP ultrawide, and 10MP 3x telephoto), as Samsung tries to keep costs down. However, the Ultra model may get treated to a new 10MP telephoto camera.

There may be better news when it comes to battery capacity, though this is only one of the contributors to battery life. As Wccftech reports, the Galaxy S26 is rumored to be getting a 4,300mAh battery, compared to the 4,000mAh battery of its predecessor—and the other two models are apparently getting similar bumps as well.

It seems as though this will be the year that Samsung adds MagSafe-style accessory snapping on top of wireless charging to its flagship Galaxy phones. WinFuture has managed to obtain details of some of the official magnetic cases that are apparently coming our way, together with the phones themselves.

There is one feature that Samsung has officially teased, and that's a "new layer of privacy" for Galaxy phone screens. When this privacy feature is enabled, it will be much harder for anyone but you to see what's on your display—cutting down the risks of 'shoulder surfers' getting a glance at passwords, PIN codes, or other sensitive information.

Overall then, it seems we'll be getting rather modest upgrades from Samsung this time around, in terms of both the hardware design and the internal specs. On the software side there are several new features to look forward to with One UI 8.5, including improved security and sharing tools, and yet more AI functionality.
