Apart from the bldg manager being her usual rude bitchy self when I was paying my rent earlier this morning, I'm in a pretty good mood today. I had so much fun with my friends at the Chinese restaurant last night, we had Peking duck, General Tso's chicken, ginger beef fried rice and a couple of dim sums. I hadn't had Peking duck in decades but it was my birthday.

10 out of 20

Under the cut, you will find a list of 20 prompts for February. Your mission is to grab at least 10 of them and create a little something for it. Keep in mind, even if it is not the meaning of the challenge, no one will punish you when you only grab one or two prompts. Every work is welcome.

To complete the challenge, you can create up to ten single works, or combine one or more prompts in one work.

Allowed are fics up to 500 words, small poems, icons (100x100 px), and small graphics up to 500 px width x height. Please stay to the maximum, even if you use more than one prompt in your work.

All fandoms, genres, and ratings are welcome, as are original works and real-person works.

When posting directly to [community profile] sweetandshort, please use a header of your choice and put bigger works under a cut. You can also post your work elsewhere, but please leave a header and a link here to keep the community running.

When posting your works, please use any appropriate tag. When a tag is missing, use 'tag needed'.

This challenge runs until February 28, midnight in your timezone.

Check-In Post - Feb 2nd 2026

badly_knitted: (Get Knitted)
[personal profile] badly_knitted posting in [community profile] get_knitted

Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

This Week's Question: What is your favourite thing to make?

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

I now declare this Check-In OPEN!

Alamo Drafthouse faces backlash after ditching no-phones policy

Moviegoers, critics and even some industry insiders are blasting Alamo's new mobile ordering system which seems to go against decades of brand-building as a distraction-free cinema.

Guests looking to order concessions will now be required to use their phones to do so, even during the movie. Fans worry they’ll also use them to text and scroll through social media.

Batch five of fills for the [community profile] threesentenceficathon! I'm having such a great time with this.

Ace Attorney, Apollo and the judge, 200 words, prompt: the judge declares the witness guilty. )

Ghost Trick/The Goes Wrong Show, Sissel and Robert, 320 words, prompt: after midnight. )

Assorted ficlets for the Goes Wrong Show, mainly Chris and Robert, 700 words total. )

I got a comment on the ficathon saying 'Your fic has actually gotten me into the Goes Wrong Show and it's also absolutely hysterical', and it made me smile so hard. By my count, I've now got... twelve or thirteen people to watch The Goes Wrong Show, I think? I'm dragging everyone into this pit with me.

Alien Romance, the daily comic strip

Maurice gets his back and arm braces

"That'd be useful! I'll grab you one." Maurice is talking about the Clapper again.

"I don't want it," Jon grumbles, moving away.

"But it's right here!"

"No."

Maurice looks closer at the display, seeing a whole bunch of As Seen On TV products.

"Just get your things so we can go," Jon snaps at him.

They leave and head to the gym. Maurice has both the arm brace and the back brace on and he's squirming uncomfortably.

"What's the verdict?" Jon asks.

"I feel like a mummy," Maurice complains. He's supposed to be carrying a duffel back with their gym clothes in it. Oh well.

"That reminds me..." says Jon. He gets on the weight lifting bench. I didn't draw how. Or all the prep they had to do. But I did draw Maurice spotting him.

Anyway, Jon continues. "What can we do to convince you not to ditch the Halloween party this year?"

"I didn't ditch on purpose," Maurice claims. He's taking his spotting job seriously, even though his right arm is all wrapped up. "I got sent on an impossible quest."

"So you won't run away?" Jon asks. "You survived your wedding, hmm?"

These daily comics don't end in convenient places. I think tomorrow's will creep toward that a little better than the last two. Sometimes things stand alone, and sometimes they ought to get posted together. Which I did consider, but it's supposed to be a 'daily' comic.

***

A lot of appointments lately, a lot of driving. A lot of fatigue. Hanging in there for the moment, though. I'm looking forward to March - I plan to hack back the buckthorn and bittersweet so I can make room for the native species that keep trying to angle for space in the borders of my back garden.

Music Meme, Day 20

A song with a number in the title:

One of the musical geniuses that Bob introduced me to years ago was Harry Nilsson. Until he helped me take a deep dive into Nilsson's work, I think I'd only heard "Everybody's Talking." After I emerged from the dive, I loved everything he ever wrote or performed. When he was young, his voice was angelic. After a few years of hard, hard living, it was no longer angelic, but it was still sweet.

There are so many Nilsson songs I'd love to share with you - Jump Into the Fire, Good Old Desk, Remember, I Guess the Lord Must Be in New York City, and so many more - just for the joy of listening to his robustly, seriously whimsical lyrics. But the meme on Day 20 asks for music that has a number in its titles, so I'll stick with that.

As it happens, there are two Nilsson songs with a number in the title. "One" is the first one, and it's beautiful.

But Nilsson wrote another song with a number as its title: 1941. This is semi-autobiographical and is a perfect example of how Nilsson could mix whimsy with sorrow.
