The first tree of the Greendale Wood did not know that was its name, when it first peered above the soil on a day when the sky was bronze and the sun was high. It would, in fact, not know any name at all for nearly a thousand years.
Hilda tells her niece a bedtime story and plans for the future. I had a lot of the story prose written very early in the writing period (er, as soon as I read

I was also originally going to use much more Gaidhlig in this, before dialling it back for the sake of oops this is an exchange fic, huh, but I'd like to point you all at Scottish Natural Heritage's searchable English/Gaidhlig dictionary of nature terms, SNH's list of Gaidhlig plant/animal/fungi words and the Natural History Museum's list of lists of all UK species ordered by criteria ranging from 'all the endangered bees' to 'all the non-marine molluscs in the country'.

I spend a lot of time in Keyleth's head in my Critical Role fic (usually when she's angsting over her kill you/be you dilemma wrt Raishan while fucking Raishan) so it was fun to flip things around and write from inside Raishan's head for a while. There's some not-entirely-subtle nods to some of my old favourite D&D things in here, notably Pathfinder's Test of the Starstone and 4E's understanding of the Astral Sea, and figuring out how to make them uniquely a part of Exandria both as Matt established it and as Raishan would understand it was a great puzzle.
